This Past Week

A note on this week’s protests…

Solar States is made of Philadelphians: Some were born and raised here, others settled and have futures here. We’re the ‘hard to imagine living anywhere else’ type, so these past few days have been difficult for us all.

These protests are necessary to address a painful past and present. We hope that they catalyze a positive future. We are contributing to the cause in the best way we know how: with our time and with our money.

On Monday, to help our community move forward, Solar States closed the office. Our team was out–in parks, on the streets– cleaning up. As I’m sure you’ve seen in pictures online, we weren’t alone. It was a pleasant sight in an otherwise unpleasant month.

The work for justice will continue long after the protests are over, and the fight requires resources. Solar States is committed to supporting that work. We have donated to Black Lives Matter Philadelphia, ACLU Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Bail Fund.

We are proud to know that our employees are good citizens, too, and each of us will continue to do our part in building an equitable future for ALL Philadelphians. We have seen change before and together we can see so much more.

We hope you’re all safe and staying positive, with plans for a brighter future.

Jerilyn received her rebate check this week. Jerilyn is happy.

About this program..

The Philadelphia Solar Rebate was created to help spur solar in Philadelphia in the wake of government tariffs and financial concerns of property owners. The Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA) consulted Solar States’ Micah Gold-Markel before bringing the proposal to the city. Initially, the rebate was to make $1 million in rebates available to residential and commercial property owners in Philadelphia. Micah proposed $500k per year for the next 5 years, for a total of $2.5 million in solar rebates.

The rebate was authorized, granting commercial property owners $.10 / watt and residential property owners $.20 / watt for any solar project installed after July 2019. This program may or may not be extended in 2024, dependent on its success.
