Registering SRECs in New Jersey

Important New Jersey’s approval process for SRECs is delayed due to an unusually high volume of submissions. If you’re a Solar States client in the process of registering New Jersey SRECs, rest assured we’re taking care of everything, and will contact you with important updates when we have them.

Navigating the Solar Renewable Energy Certificate (SREC) registration process in New Jersey can seem daunting, but Solar States is here to simplify it for you. Here’s an overview of the steps involved, helping you understand this crucial part of maximizing your solar investment.

Step 1: Interconnection Part 1

After installing your solar system, the first step is submitting your paperwork for interconnection (IC). New Jersey requires a two-part form submission. Both parts ask for similar information (system size, contact information, etc.). The second part serves as a confirmation of the first.

Once we submit Part 1, it typically takes 2-4 weeks for approval, provided all information is correct.

Step 2: Interconnection Part 2
Interconnection Part 2 (called IC2) is submitted post-installation with the request for Permission to Operate (PTO). Although technically we can submit IC2 soon after IC1 is approved, it’s essential to wait until the system is fully installed. This ensures the accuracy of the information provided in Part 2.

During this period, you might receive generic auto-emails from NJ about your SRECs. Don’t worry; we handle all the submissions and will inform you of any necessary actions on your part.

Step 3: Approval Process
Once Part 2 is submitted, the approval process can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months. The state is currently experiencing extended wait times. Read about the delays on the NJDEP website.

Step 4: Final Steps and SREC Trade Registration
Once registered, SRECTrade will be granted access to your system’s production monitoring portal, and will mint and sell the SRECs your system generates on your behalf.

Your Role: Signatures and Forms
Your involvement is minimal but crucial. Initially, we require your signature for Interconnection Part 1. Additionally, SRECTrade will send you a Schedule A form to sign and return. This is often done via DocuSign for convenience.

While the SREC registration process in New Jersey is lengthy and can be complex, rest assured that Solar States manages the bulk of it. If you have any concerns or questions, we’re always here to help, ensuring your journey towards sustainable energy is a smooth one.
