☀️ Why PECO Pays Dave

Dave lives in Haverford, Pennsylvania, with his wife, his solar system, and his Tesla Powerwall. Dave loves spreadsheets. So when Dave called us (with spreadsheets in hand) a year after we installed his solar & Powerwall system, and explained that PECO had just sent him a check for $525, and that his payback period dropped from 9 years to 7 years…well, we packed up the Solar States-mobile and headed out to get his story. Solar States is a Certified Tesla Powerwall installer serving any area within a 2-hour drive of the City of Philadelphia, where we are proudly based.

☀️ How Dave Did It

PECO paid Dave $525 for his electricity last year. But..wait..why?!!

This is the story of how one Haverford man, one very spreadsheet-happy Haverford man, uses his Solar + Powerwall setup to GET PAID for his electricity!

😃 ABOUT DAVE:
– Dave installed a solar + Powerwall system with Solar States
– Dave owns 2 EVs
– Dave loves spreadsheets

📈 TOU RATES:
With PECO Time-of-use rates, customers are charged different rates throughout the day. Other utilities have TOU rates, too, but here’s PECO’s current breakdown of times / charges:

1. Peak Weekdays: (2 p.m. – 6 p.m.) PRICE $0.32906 per kWh
2. Off-Peak Weekdays: (6 a.m. – 2 p.m. & 6 p.m. – 12 a.m. ) $0.06663 per kWh
3. Off-Peak Weekends and Holidays: (6 a.m. – 12 a.m.) $0.06663 per kWh
4. Super Off-Peak All Days: (12 a.m. – 6 a.m.) $0.04564 per kWh

🔋 WHAT DAVE DOES:
– At night Dave charges his vehicles when electricity is very cheap (off-peak).
– When the sun rises Dave uses the solar production to power his home, and to charge his Powerwall.
– By ~9:00 a.m. every day, the Powerwall is fully charged.
– Excess production from the solar system is sold to PECO from ~9:00 a.m. -> 2:00 p.m., when Peak pricing begins.
– At 2:00 p.m., the Powerwall begins to power Dave’s home with the electricity it stored in the morning.
– Dave sells ALL solar production from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. to PECO, when rates are 7x as high as they are during off-peak hours.

💰💰💰 DAVE’S RESULTS
– Last year PECO sent Dave a check for $525 in May, to settle up on the year.
– Payback period dropped from 9 years to 7 years with TOU rates.
– If Dave ever sells his home he will tell the buyer, ‘oh, you don’t pay for electricity, they pay you’.
– Dave works from home – Powerwall serves as seamless backup. ‘I only know I lost power because I can hear my neighbor’s generator running.’

PECO rates increased between the time this video was shot and made, which explains the higher On-Peak price you’ll notice in the video (compared to his past bill).

Do batteries qualify for the 30% ITC?

Yes, both solar systems and batteries qualify for the 30% Investment Tax Credit through 2032.

Dave mentioned Payback Period. What about SRECs?

Dave earns about $40 per month from SRECs. SRECs were included in his estimated 7-year payback period on this solar & battery system.

PECO has time-of-use rates, but do other utilities?

P.S......

A couple of other things about Powerwall that Dave loves:

  1. Seamless backup: “I only ever know my power went out because I can hear my neighbor’s generator running.” Powerwall is silent and instant.
  2. Smart: Dave loves the Storm Watch setting: “When Storm Watch is enabled, Powerwall will automatically activate Storm Watch mode when your local weather service sends a severe weather alert. This mode charges Powerwall to maximum capacity to automatically maximize your protection from grid outages.”
