Up to $6,000 in Rebates Plus a 30% Federal Tax Credit for Delaware Homeowners
Delmarva Power customers in Delaware have a great opportunity to capitalize on the state’s photovoltaic (PV) grants for solar energy systems. These grants, combined with the 30% Federal Tax Credit from the Inflation Reduction Act, make the transition to solar power significantly more affordable for homeowners, businesses, and non-profits. Let’s break down how these incentives work and what they mean for different types of installations.
Understanding the Photovoltaic Grants
Photovoltaic (PV) grants are available for systems up to 100 kW. The grant amount varies by customer type and is calculated per watt ($/W) installed. Importantly, no grant can exceed 50% of the total project cost, and there are maximum limits to consider:
- Residential: $0.70/W up to $6,000
- Non-Residential: $0.70/W up to $30,000
- Certified Diverse Business: $0.80/W up to $40,000
- Non-Profit: $0.75/W up to $35,000
Federal Solar Tax Credit
The federal residential solar energy credit allows you to claim a 30% tax credit on the cost of your solar PV system. This tax credit is applied to your federal income taxes, reducing the amount you owe dollar-for-dollar. This credit applies to systems installed between 2022 and 2032.
Combining Rebates with the 30% Federal Tax Credit
By combining the Delaware state rebates with the federal tax credit, homeowners can significantly reduce the upfront costs of installing a solar energy system. Example: A homeowner installs a 10 kW solar system. Eligible Rebate: 10,000 W * $0.70/W = $7,000. Since the maximum grant for residential customers is $6,000, the homeowner would receive the full $6,000. The Federal Tax Credit would slash an ADDITIONAL 30% off of the system cost. Let’s take a look at a few more examples.
Examples of Delmarva Solar Rebates
Homeowner Example
Eligible Rebate: 10,000 W * $0.70/W = $7,000
Since the maximum grant for residential customers is $6,000, the homeowner would receive the full $6,000. The Federal Tax Credit would slash an ADDITIONAL 30% off of the system cost.
Business Example
Eligible Rebate: 50,000 W * $0.70/W = $35,000
Here, the maximum grant for non-residential installations is $30,000. Therefore, the business would receive $30,000. The federal tax credit will further reduce the cost by 30%.
Non-Profit Example
Eligible Rebate: 20,000 W * $0.75/W = $15,000
The maximum grant for non-profits is $35,000, so the non-profit would receive $15,000. Non-profits are eligible for the Direct Pay option under the Inflation Reduction Act, allowing them to receive a 30% direct payment on the total cost of the system.
